Dwarf mulberry not really a dwarf?

No. As I’ve shown you repeatedly, the Bay Laurel information on their website does not match the information distributed by DWN. Further, a standard M. alba mulberry is upwards of 50’ so dwarf is around 25’.

it grew 6 ft in one year with just three or four leaders, and then ‘changed course’ by sending several leads 4-5 feet tall per year from the lower rungs, thus assuming a bushy stance, while the central leaders didn’t grow as fast, but continue to grow and now attained >10 feet tall in just three or four years, whereas our noirs have barely touched 3 feet tall, lol. I didn’t buy the everbearing nigra from DW or bay laurel. Got it from Ison’s as a 2.5 inch toothpick, and growing on its own roots, which was outright proof it was not a nigra. Further research indicate that these were obtained from tissue-cultures.
makes me think too that if they were already employing this tech, that they should have dabbled on true nigras a long time ago, but no.
so could only surmise that cell lines from nigras might be too old to respond to tissue culture, and may only be invigorated by grafting to younger rootstock, or that nigras are just impossible to root, not even with the most advanced rooting hormone analogs.
btw, burntridge seems to be selling ‘black beauty everbearing morus nigra’ too, but only recently. The black beauty i bought from them years ago were the real deal, however

Yes, but of what?

These are from L.E. Cooke.

not nigras, for sure. An alba, more likely.

I can presently order trays of M. nigra TC’s, 72 per tray and the supplier has an est. 10,000 in stock. What makes you think they are not M. nigra?

well that is good news. I am buying one pronto, as want to see one in the flesh. Ahorra!
please tell me who to send the check to.

Ask Ison’s who their supplier is.

that is sad Richard. Unless you’re broadcasting to all and sundry they have righted their wrong, and are now selling true nigras

just checked their website, and glad they are no longer tagging it as morus nigra

Wellspring Gardens also uses that supplier. However, I believe DWN uses Monrovia’s Oregon TC operation.

@sarahw, I believe you can ultimately get to the bottom of your mystery by following @SanJoseFool’s advice and inquiring at the DWN Forums:

oh, and they don’t even offer morus nigras anymore

Next time I’m at a nursery that sells these trees, I will take a photo of the full tag front and back for these trees that says the exact same info that is on the bay laurel site. Literally word for word.

It’d be easier to ask at the DWN boards.

AgriStarts sells the 72 pack of ‘Dwarf Everberry’ Mulberry…They originally had it listed as Morus nigra and I emailed Ty Strode at AgriStarts and informed him that it wasn’t but offered to do nucleus size determination to be sure (as I have only tested two separate sources of ‘Dwarf Everbearing’). The last I heard from him he was going to send me a plant, but I guess his own research led him to the same conclusion, as I now see they have it listed as “Morus sp.”

quite pathetic, right? Still hoping though @Richard’s claims of tissue-cultured true nigras is not a hoax.

and considering that his supplier is locked and loaded with ~ 10,000 in stock, and ready for broadcasting…

eh, Richard?

here’s another nursery posting the same exact pictures as isons, and with the same word-for-word description, but this one says outright that it is a nigra

http://www.logees.com/dwarf-mulberry-dwarf-everbearing-morus-nigra.html

Quoting Ty Strode from AgriStarts “It would not surprise me, if we were wrong too. I want to be right. Our original plant (‘Dwarf Everbearing’) was from Logee’s – not sure if that helps you or not.” and “We supply a lot of young plants to growers & have the responsibility to be selling things true to name”.

I wish all nurseries were that concerned about proper identification of the plants they are selling.

ayayay…
considering that the pictures and description are the same in their advertisements, makes me now think that isons is the robin to logees being batman…

and here are more robins in the form of ebay and amazon.com selling the same thing, and ‘wellspring gardens’ is the headliner for both.

I ordered the one from Logee’s and all three M nigra offered by Burnt Ridge. Will plant them and the one I have now in 20 gal fabric pots. Maybe one will be the real deal.

it was this spring that burntridge apparently shifted their black beauty(now being posted at their website as dwarf black) to the everbearing being sold by logees. One of the members here filed a complaint but to no avail. Certain though that her complaint alerted them to revisit their stock
Ms Whitman of whitmanfarms also told me she supplies burntridge with noirs(and gerardi’s), so there’s a good chance you’re getting the real mccoy.
and if you also ordered the persian from burntridge, likely that they haven’t changed their stock from several years ago, since it is not as in-demand as noirs and blac beauty. The persian they sent us was a true nigra. Also likely to get a relatively large and seasoned persian, as noirs and blac beauty have high turnovers.
