In praise of the Challenger peach

I’m currently picking my first peaches of the season which this year is Challenger. The Challenger peach does not garner much discussion on the forum but from my experience, Challenger as a winner and a variety to consider. Like many this year, my peach crop got hit hard by those late March freezes, but like most years with late spring freezes, my Challenger tree was the best producer of my 9 varieties. My Challenger peaches are a little larger than average, have a pretty red color, clean with very little bacterial spot issues and most importantly, have a sweet, classic yellow peach taste.

Thanks for the report! I agree, it does not get much mention here compared to its NCSU brethren Contender and Carolina Gold.

I’m glad it has a good taste and hardiness! I planted Intrepid, Challenger, and Carolina Gold from Vaughn this spring for their hardiness. (Contender was already sold out, and easier to get elsewhere.)

Is it fully free stone?

Any peach that can survive our late cold snaps and produces a sweet fruit is a winner in my book.

Very nice! I’ve never even heard of one before now. Not a lot of fuzz either. Look mouth-watering! Just blemish free awesomeness :slight_smile:
(Makes me glad I took a bag of Redhaven out of the freezer to thaw out this morning - now I can have my peach fix!)

Those look amazing Chris! I pulled the fruit from my 2nd leaf challenger to allow it to get bigger this year. Based on your review it looks like I’m going to have some nice tasting peaches next year! Yumbo!

Yip, Challenger is fully free stone.

Here is a whopper size one I picked today, all the rain we have had in June may have pumped it up some.
