Nadia Sweet cherry x plum hybrid

Specially we need to see more pictures of Nadia NOT come from Raintree nursery.

@Antmary, her tree also has fruit with long stem.

A better possible way to find out then Raintree I would think would be to contact Brandt’s Fruit Trees. I remember when this first came out I checked their website but it said nothing about Nadia at the time. See the links below which say that Associated International Group of Nurseries has exclusive rights to propagate and commercialize the variety in all countries except Australia. Lynnell Brandt, whose nursery Brandt’s Fruit Trees in Yakima, Washington, is the sole AIGN member in North America.

Brandt’s website does not list Nadia on their cherry list. However someone may want to email them.

My Nadia came from Raintree 2016 and hasn’t bared fruit yet. I hope its the long stem. That fruit is certainly more intriguing to me.

Short or long stem?

Very good catch! Yes, I would agree. But we need an explanation,

In an article about Nadia from 2013 they show the short stem.

Here they credit the photo of short stem types is from Brandt’s. (same photo as above)

So it appears the short stem is legit, and so is the long stem. I noticed stem length varies on my fruit. Those close to the trunk have short stems, those fruits off on branches have longer stems.

It appears at least to me, the short stem types are legit. At least it’s not a mix up. Why others show long stem I’m not sure? A legit question to the breeder for sure.

They rubbed the bloom off the fruits in front. The back are as natural with the waxy bloom still on the fruit.

My Raintree plant in the greenhouse has 30 fruit. All have very short stems. Most so short you can’t see the stem. An outside plant has one fruit with a very short stem.

Ok, another piece of the puzzle…

See table on page 93. It is a comparison between Nadia and a generic sweet cherry. In the row for “Stem” the sweet cherry states “yes,” while the entry for Nadia says “No and Yes (Treated)” with an annotation indicating: “Stem elongation can be induced by treatment with gibberellins.”

Now… I very much doubt anyone here has treated their Nadia to induce longer stem growth without knowing it…but gibberellins are natural plant compounds.

Is it possible the root stock is influencing stem development?

The Raintree Nadias that most here have are on St Julian A. Are they long stem or short stem? (I have one of these as well, but thanks to our weird weather this spring no fruit…)

What other root stocks are out there and how do they compare?

Way back in this thread I contacted the Australian folks when there was a concern about pollinators and posted their replies. I still have that contact & the breeders info so I’ll email them this morning.
This whole thing is so entertaining.

Are they both from Raintree? Oop’s I misread last the last part . I thought you said the outside had a long stem. I would think all of Raintree stock is the same. My fruit will have a short stem and probably be a plum.

I always wondered about this. Before there were any pics of the actual fruit I thought they are long stem and like this (notice that first pic has short stem and the other 2 long). I think the 2nd picture with the ruler was the first Nadia picture online

Then I started seeing a lot of short stem fruit posted by growers here and also from other sources so I thought the original pictures were just random pics of different fruit. Here is the one sold in Belgium (click on Nadia).
These come from commercial growers so they should be legit - short stem

Well it appears the short stem is what the growers in the USA show ( and Belgium), so as far as I’m concerned, the long stem are the fakes or were treated with hormones.

I bet those 2 pics show hormone treated fruits, as it other sites with the same photo they describe the fruit as long stemmed.I believe Ozy nailed it. Now why others have long stems like Vincent, I’m not sure? @Vincent_8B could you measure those stems for us? The fruit otherwise looks exactly like my short stem fruit. Of course Satsuma looks like that too. I’m growing both side by side, once mature they do not look alike.

I am kind of late, but I want to add that my couple of remaining fruits have the stems on the shorter side, they are not extremely short, but I would say they are in agreement with the all short stemmed pictures shown above. Maybe when the fruit get larger in the proportion to the fruit they will look even shorter. I think the length of the stem depends on the fruit maturity. As the fruit expands it covers the part of the stem. It happens with my apples. Right now they have normal stems on but when they mature some of apples can push themselves off the branch because of the short stems.

The 2nd pic is on a red cherry sizing card showing that the fruit is way bigger than the biggest cherry grade. The contrast in stem between the first and second picture couldn’t be much more stark. My fruit is very much like the first picture.

The 2nd link showing commercial fruit in Belgium shows a stem in between. Shorter than @vincent_8B

I don’t know how to measuring fruits, but this is the newest pictures for references.

I think the lengh of stems is about the same as long as the fruits. Fruits pointed down because of the long stems

OK, well I used a measuring tape, but I can see it’s long. Now to see what it turns into? And will it produce the same long stems next year?

To my eyes it is definitely longer and even when the fruits are larger the long stem still be long.

Even @Vincent_8B fruit doesn’t have the cherry like look of the fruit on the cherry sizing card. But it’s a lot different from mine. Seems like there must be a mix up somewhere.

@Bradybb does your fruit look like @Vincent_8B? Does anyone else have fruit like Vincent?
