Onion skin missing

Grew some ‘Zoey’ onions this summer. Just harvested them. Despite being rather unimpressive plants compared to ‘Candy’ and ‘Pontiac’ (smaller with thinner leaves and stems), they sized up well.

However, about a third have a ‘crack’ in the skin at the base. Will this affect storage? And was it something I did? It’s possible that there is actually another layer of skin there that will turn tan as they cure, but I don’t want to mess around with it enough to be able to tell.

Meanwhile the ‘Candy’ onions are near-perfect:

Yup, the skin is just a dried layer of onion, you can use the skins to make vegetable stock. I’d use those first and keep an eye on them for rot while in storage.
