Placentia Walnut

Correction: it is rooted on Paradox, a cross between English Walnut (Juglans regia) and Northern California Black (Juglans hindsii).

Our tree is about done for the season and the nut sheaths have been cracking for a week or two. Today I harvested all of them. Last year was the first substantial harvest from the tree and this year yielded about the same quantity. Overall I’m happy with the progress.

I pruned our walnut today. Here’s some photos of before and after removing leaves, dead shoots, and a few crossing branches.

How old is that? Looks so small to be fruiting.

I estimate it was a 1.5 year old graft on rootstock when I acquired and planted it in 2017, so it is 7 years total now.

Why is yours not a monster at 7 years old? How have you managed to keep it so small. And cropping.

9/22. I noticed the crows were getting interested in the fissures on some of the walnut husks so I picked them today. I almost filled a 2 gallon bucket. :slightly_smiling_face:
