Tree hogs

My local groundhog has discovered a taste for young mulberry leaves. He’ll climb up any that he can find and strip all the leaves off. Almost all of the mulberry saplings in my yard are now permanently bent over from the weight.

I guess this is probably a best case scenario for groundhog behavior, though. He doesn’t bother my garden, most of the mulberries are weeds that I really should dig up, and they’ll probably all shrug off the leaf loss anyway.

I still thought it was interesting/unusual behavior worth noting. Anybody else seen something similar?

Absolutely. Groundhogs are just as comfortable off the ground as they are on. Back when I owned coon hounds, they would often tree ground hogs. They’re great swimmers too.
