Our small backyard has two older trees, a Gravenstein apple and a Winter Nelis pear, which I have been gradually revitalizing since we got here in 2008. This will be my third year of grafting more climate-appropriate varieties onto them. These are the whole trees I've planted since 2011 (not counting the ones I've removed and replaced): Reed and Pinkerton avocado, Katy apricot, Babcock peach, Lapins cherry, Desert King fig, Hachiya persimmon, Mirabelle/Parfume de September Euro plum, as well as a Meyer lemon and Skagg’s Bonanza orange that friends gave us. Most of these have other cultivars grafted onto them now--grafting is quickly becoming a compulsion. I have a vigorous peach tree that I grew from the pit of an unknown, peculiar heirloom tree. It doesn’t fruit too well here, so I’ve been top-grafting it with all sorts of stone fruits. I’ve also got a Black Jack fig, Honey Babe dwarf peach, and Dapple Supreme Pluot in pots, as well as an apple rootstock that I've been multi grafting for friends. I have two Banana Passion Fruit vines and two Black Knights. There are eight southern highbush blueberries in the ground, too: four Southmoon, two Misty, and two O’Neal. So nothing too exotic, but I will be branching out soon. I love hearing everyone’s gardening stories, tips, and lore, and am working on educating myself through reading these forums and attending local CRFG events.
