The one I just sampled was very dry. Maybe I need to step up the watering. Not very impressive at all.
8 grams of juice on an almost 60 gram fruit is pretty pathetic..

Is that just that variety or did you get them late or is the tree young etc.?
Its the first year it has fruited. I picked a Eureka next to it, it was way juicier. But both themulberries and Tom Mcclendon spoke about it not being super juicy. However, in Japan its spoken of as a juicing variety. Could be 1st year quality or like Yuzu that the Japanese variety is a different strain from the CCCP strain.

I ordered from Madison since i have a history with them and its very positive.
Today i received a 10 degree mandarin and an Ichang Papeda.
Also in the one pic, on the left, is a 2 year old 942 rootstock that im fruiting just to see…

That sounds like a great plan. The private citrus collections of people like us are growing bigger as greening continues to close farms in Florida. I hope real estate developers dont wind up with all the farms in south Florida. 942 is supposed to taste pretty decent. Nice banana!

Madison Citrus doesn’t carry Ichang Papeda, that’s a Sudachi.
Papedas are a group of citrus species that are mostly uncommon wild types. A few common hybrids though include some papeda ancestors. A tropical papeda species is one of the parents of Key Lime for example.
Ichang Papeda is a species with several different accessions in the US, though none are easy to find.
Sudachi is a Japanese cultivar of small, sour citrus that’s moderately cold hardy. It and Kabosu are both children of Yuzu, both having somewhat more juice and better fruit but also both being a little less hardy. Yuzu and Ichang Lemon aka Shangjuan are both themselves descended from a wild citrus that was some kind of papeda very closely related to Ichang Papeda.
So what you have isn’t Ichang Papeda, it’s Sudachi, which is a wild papeda (closely related to Ichang Papeda) x wild mandarin that was backcrossed again to some kind of mandarin.
In terms of fruit quality, it’s basically Ichang Papeda < Yuzu < Sudachi
In terms of hardiness, it’s Sudachi < Yuzu < Ichang Papeda
Ichang Papeda fruit is pretty much unpalatable, Yuzu is dry and seedy but has excellent zest, Sudachi is basically a small, aromatic lime substitute. Ichang Papeda is hardy to single digits or zero under ideal circumstances once mature, Sudachi probably somewhere around 10 F, and Yuzu in the middle.
