From the proceedings of the 1899 American Pomological Society.
I find it strange some of Georgia’s best apples do well elsewhere; but are not recommended for Georgia. Of course it could be favored apples of commercial growers. Fort’s Prize{Jim Kell} had already won best in nation apple awards but is not listed. Disharoon, King Soloman, Terry Winter and Old Fashion Limbertwig left off too.
I don’t remember who wrote that report but it’s usually the head of the state’s horticulture committee or the state extension specialist. So it’s commercial variety orientated.
I’m in the lower Piedmont in AL, which is similar climate to a large swath of central GA. Bitter rot and fireblight are the main problems. From that list I have Carter’s blue, yates, winesap, OF limbertwig, and Terry winter. All have fruited except Carter’s blue. The only one that has been pretty good eating so far is winesap. I like that one a lot. I plan to evaluate flavor for another year or two before I start ripping them out. They all will get FB, but I have not seen much rot on these compared with other varieties such as goldrush. GR also does very well but you have to spray for rot otherwise there will be no fruit that’s free of rot and edible.
