2020 Apple haul

My one Liberty-Frankentree had a kind of a skimpy year compared to last, but still ask much as we can handle, but nothing much for sharing:

We’ll eat the Karmijn de Sonnaville and Rubinette first off, bake a pie with Calville Blanc, probably leave the Jonagold, Carousel, and Prairie Spy as long as possible. (Last year the Prairie Spy just didn’t get very good even with a long storage, so we may be moving on from them if they don’t shape up soon!) Liberties need to be all gone by March.

All that from one tree? And you call it skimpy? Yikes! What is the rootstock? Good goin’.

I know, it sounds like a back-handed brag. but last year we had all those and gave away at least that much. But I think I should have held the tree back more than I did. The main tree is a Liberty, and Alan aptly describes Liberty as a “fruit machine”. Plus the Karmijn was really exuberant this year. Surprised me how much it gave.

I don’t know the rootstock. I bought it 20+ years ago from a local nursery before I was aware of much of those things. It was sold as a “semi dwarf” and when I contacted them later to ask they couldn’t tell me. But it has been easy to keep to a mid-sized tree, and I have had no problems with it that weren’t my own fault. I’ve been told it could be MM 106 or maybe M7, probably not big enough for M2. And that’s all I know about that!

Humble-brag away! You’ve put in the time to earn it.

Unless I’m severely underestimating the size of that fridge and those apples, my daughter and I would probably burn through those in two or three months.

You’re probably about right. They will last us until late winter -about 4 - 5 months -if the past is a good indicator.

i grafted a couple liberty scions to my y. transparent last spring. they put on about 16in. of growth. maybe ill get to taste them next summer. got sweet sixteen , frostbite and williams pride on my crab apple. should be interesting when they all start to produce.

Liberty has great years and so-so years, with most in between. I think a hot, somewhat dry summer and a long cool autumn might be the key, but with the weather never having a typical year it’s hard to nail things down!
