2021 Buds, Flowers and Fruit!

Skin does not even feel it after drying because it is so thin. But it helps if a peach is little over ripe to keep everything intact.

Round zucchini. These are Ronde de Nice and I really like them, they stay tender a long time

First potatoes. These are Red Duke of York. As you can see, the contrast between the skin and the flesh is very STRIKING. Sadly this got somewhat lost trough the roasting…

Passion fruits: dropping everyday

Panache (Tiger): variegated and green figs on the same tree, the same inside and taste

Variegated top, green bottom

Garnsey figs: some are so perfect and sweet I feel bad that I will have to dry them. Too many and they bruise easily in a day or so.

Eversweet strawberries… yes in southern TN August… not all that big… but will produce thru the heat 90+ with rain or watering. We have been getting plenty of rain.

Just now saw your Jilin photos. They look great but are a bit different than I expected. The slight bell shape and especially the skin. All 3 of the Asian Pears I have grown had brown skin that was heavily russeted and almost brown in color. The skin on yours look more like Euro pears. Have you tasted any yet? Does it have the crisp, sweet, unique taste of other Asian Pears?

@IL847 How long have you been growing Jilin? Do you like it? Somehow I had in my mind that @PharmerDrewee acquired Jilin and named it (for the town he got the seeds or wood from) but I must be wrong…or maybe you got yours from him? Can one of you two remind me of the source of this pear? Thanks!

Hi Kevin! Some Asian pears are green or yellowish without russetting. My Shin Li pear is like that and even more oblong in shape like a Euro pear. This is the first year that Jilin is fruiting for me.

I did not acquire the seeds. I got the scions from the USDA germplasm repository in Corvallis. Someone brought the seed over the ocean which resulted in this tree though.

Thanks, Drew. Thnat’s helpful. I thought this was your first year to get Jilin, and I’m not sure where I got the idea that you had acquired seeds and named it. ha! My memory is just awful. But I was pretty sure I remembered that someone had brought seeds over to get the tree started, so it least I had that right even if it wasn’t you. My Jilin which you so kindly sent me put on a lot of growth this year so it should put on some fruit next year.

This is first time jilin has fruits. I am very much look forward to tasting it. Its bloom is not frost hardy. It bloomed many times but no fruits. Andrew is right about the source of the scion

What’s the flavor like on those Eversweets?

@FarmGirl-Z6A … I would say classic strawberry flavor… just what you would expect. Better than store bought for sure…

Average size is on the small side… but mine for the most part live off rain and are mulched good… I water very little.

I bought them because they were advertised as being able to produce berries in the south in the heat of summer… and that has been true for me here in southern TN zone 7a.

Not a heavy producer… but it is rare for me to walk my food forest and not collect a handful of them. Best I remember last year we got them into October.

@Naeem , my oldest ones are about 8 or 9 years old and then I have trees that I have grafted every year since then. I am especially pleased with my Limbertwig collection which I will from the looks of it be able to sample around thirty varieties this year.

Will be very interested in hearing your impression. I’ve got 12 Limbertwigs and haven’t gotten to taste a single one yet. Maybe next year…

These Burbank are still very hard. Plums shown in the pictures were dropped very sweet but not fully ripe. Good size and flavor .

I’d like reports on ‘taste tests’ too if you get a crop someday.
My Black L.T. has not done anything. I made 3 grafts of Red Royal L.T. that look ok in pots at present.

Whenever that “someday” finally gets here, absolutely will do

Just picked William’s pride. Total of 5 of them. The one I cut up was delicious with no water core. Big apples with not a spot on them after 4 organic sprays.

Mine have been hanging a long time and aren’t quite as dark as yours. They taste pretty good but I definitely prefer both Zestar and Pristine.

Every extra day they hang makes me think something else will get them. I could wait no longer.

i have a few grafts of it on my y. transparent and sargents crab. hoping to get to taste them next summer. if they taste good, i may invest in a tree just of them due to their disease resistance.
