I did whip and tongue the older wood on mine, mostly because it matched my scions.
This year I gafted apple, pears, cherries and peaches. Mostly whip and tongue and cleft grafts. But I did do what i’m calling a modifed whip and tongue to the side of a rootstock when it was a lot larger diameter than the scion. I haven’t seen what I’m calling a modifed whip and tounge before but i’m also sure i’m not the first person to do this graft before either. I didnt take any pictures or I would post them to explain the technique. I have a lot of grafts that’s already broken bud or swelling. 100% sucessful takers with cherries ")
This year I was smarter than last year and made sure I have extra scionwood for each variety in case some dont take and I have to be regrafted. I mean in reality, you only need one good bud on the scion but based on bud orientation i left 2 or 3, plus the tips when the scion had a tip bud. I had lots of cherry scions so I left as many buds as the scion had when I grafted them.
I’m used to working with 1/4” stock, but some of these straight portions are pushing 1/2”…not easy to get fancy with given my (lack of) knife skills.
Onto apples now with the g.890s. It’s going a little better, but I just feel off on my skills the past 2 days. My “tongues” are coming out too thick and it’s wanting to split the stock and scion apart when I push them together. I never had this problem the past 3 years since I started. Maybe I should try cutting less of a tongue on a few.
I would let them grow more at this point.
Probably still too early to call success, I know grafts can fail whenever, but I’m excited now! Looking forward to trying “Sam’s Green”. Not sure how widespread it is, but a fellow member’s brother selected it from a seedling grown tree.
Seeing a little action from the plums now too! These are definitely within the range of what could be just stored energy, but it made me happy.
The two Breda Giant medlars look promising too.
Of course I’m not posting photos of what has yet to show signs of life and definitely not posting the grafts that came untapped and the scion fell out.

Do you have Bullock? Ram told me that variety is still blooming late in March. So maybe that’s a good choice for the region. Certainly any loquat that can put on blooms after February is a really good bet for us.
No, but I’d like to try it if the fruit is average or better for a selection.
I just put a couple bullock grafts on quince rootstocks. So far they look alright, like they are getting moisture. Hopefully some new leaves sprout in a few weeks.
Just put my Red Delicious and Arkansas Black in the ground. The low tomorrow night was forecasted at 41*. I just looked after I planted them and they have lowered it to 37*. Hopefully they will be ok! I put mulch around them after the pictures were taken.
I grafted pears: Dana Hovey, Orient, Butirra Rosatta Morettini, Improved Kieffer, Honeysweet, Ambrosia, Lincoln, and a couple of others today. All are on callery rootstock.
Red royal limbertwig grafted to my backyard crabapple last spring.
Black limbertwig grafted to my backyard crabapple last spring.
Gerardi mulberry grafted W/T to BRN russian mulberry rootstock.

AU Cherry plum grafted to my AU Rosa tree. I did 3 of those and all 3 are looking good.
Bell and Potomac pear grafted to my improved kiefer tree… I did 2 grafts of each both looking good.
Warren and Karls Favorite grafted to my kiefer pear tree… I did 2 of each and all are looking good.
Today I also added 2 grafts of Trailman crab and 2 of Pristine… to my backyard crabapple. It is slowly becoming a Franken tree.
I added a graft of trailman and pristine to my novamac out in my orchard… and added a graft of chestnut crab to my early mcintosh out in the orchard.
Trailman and pristine should bloom with novamac… and chestnut with early mcintosh.

How long before everyone typically sees new growth after grafting? I am sure weather and species affects this but I grafted two weeks ago and am just now seeing a little green on the buds on my pear grafts and not sure if it is a fail or normal.
Doesn’t seem too off to me yet.
@weatherandtrees How did your G.890 roots look? This was my first year ordering G.890 and the roots seemed a bit weak once I actually sorted them - kind of like G.41 - many RS with just two or three roots with no root hairs, and lots of roots left in the bottom of the sorting bucket. They were from CopenHaven (who I’ve been happy with otherwise). Did you end up ordering from them? Other RS I’ve worked with that had more substantial roots were G.202, G.210, G.214, B.118, and M.111.
Could you enlighten me about the black pots that look like torture devices?
Air pruning pots for roots. Keep roots from circling inside of pots. Some brands- Air Pots, Ultr-Oxy and RooTrimmer.
