Ah Ha Moment

Bought me a clearly labeled Rome apple tree. After a couple of years of babying it I have about six apples. I was like a proud father with a new child. When the apples got to about 2" in diameter and stopped growing I thought that they were resting and they would take off growing soon. No they just sat there with no change. I kept telling myself that they would get bigger soon and take on a red color. Well it didn’t happen. I picked a couple and they were small and sweet. I’m not sure what I have unless it is Yates.

Edit. Yates was a bad guess on my part.

I like the color of them

What color is it? It’s hard to tell, but from what I see, it’s white, with yellow on top. Or is the lighting off?

Here’s what I found on Yates (at bottom of page):

It looks white with a butterscotch colored top to me

Yates was a bad guess on my part if for no other reason than it appears to be ripe without any red color.

Your right about the color

Well, by getting cheated out of Rome I don’t think you were deprived of a terrific apple. Rome’s beauty is pretty much skin deep, isn’t it?

Although I did love baked Romes as a child now I want a baked apples that doesn’t go all soft.

The “butterscotch” looks to me like a frost wound. It is a grafted tree, right? I’ve never seen an apple with that color. Maybe it is a limb sport of Rome, but I doubt that also.

I like the looks of that little apple. People wonder why we want scions instead of ordering trees, mix ups happen I guess but it take 5-10 years to find out sometimes.

It is a grafted tree. Actually I don’t feel cheated mostly because I like the taste of this apple more than the Rome and I’m sure my Grands will like it also.

Contrary to good advice about not letting your trees fruit early I push my trees to fruit early for accurate fruit ID and if I have not tasted it before, I can graft over it sooner.

Bill,
Whatever it is, it looks like a keeper. Could it be some kind of crab apple?

This is the last one for 2016.

It is small but taste very good so my current plan is to let it stay. Wish I had more of these apples this year.
