Good evening,
I have read up and watched a bunch of YouTube videos, but does anybody have any information on air layering apple trees? What is the success and time frame of having a successful root system? Any help is much appreciated. Pics are welcomes as well. Thank you I’m advance
I have started 5 air-layers on a bartlett pear, 3 on apple, 2 on a sweet cherry and one on a plum. All were started in may and will check the first one in the middle of July. I hope to have pictures then.[
I just did a check on one of the apple tree air layers and the roots are coming through the cellophane wrapping so I guess I will have to remove it and put it into a pot or grow bag to harden off the roots before planting it in the ground. It should be pruned too. The branch I air layered on this one was about 4 ft and had 2 lateral branches of about a foot each. Will it be better to prune it while it is still attached to the tree or plant it in the grow bag and then prune it? I am sure the root ball will not be large enough to handle all the growth on the branch.
