I did a video about air layering figs and i only had a few air layers that were left unattended since they were made, to illustrate the final result. And the roots were fine and the plants are growing without problems.
So i believe we can say that this method works. It allows me to make the air layer, never water it and in the end of the season, if i forget about it, it can still be cut and placed in a pot, producing a new plant.
Also, no problems with damaged roots when removing the container. The roots are tough and very resistant to any manipulation, unlike fresh root air layers that are removed too soon.
