Alpine strawberries getting smaller?

I love my Alpine strawberries. Sweet, flavorful and prolific. I’ve had them about six years (third summer in this location). But this year, the fruit is sparse and smaller than usual. The plants look healthy and I’ve treated them the same as ever (mulch in the spring, water if really dry).
Do alpines need to be divided? Some plants have much smaller leaves than others.
Thanks!

Yes. I’ve noticed when they get crowded in a pot the berries get smaller – presumably due to competition for water.

These are in ground, do you think they could crowd themselves? Each clump is a foot apart but some clumps are pretty big.

Yup.

Thanks. Should I wait till dormancy or divide them now?

Well, sounds like it is time to experiment. Also known as do it whenever I get around to it.
Thanks.
