Anyone grown Indian Free Peach in a container?

If so, how did it go? What is a good pollinator for this late bloomer?

I got a Liz’s Late as a pollenizer for my Indian Free. They are both young and not bearing yet so I can’t comment on how well it’s functioning as a pollinator, but my Indian free did set some fruit that it dropped at the 1/4 inch size (it’s still a tiny tree). Liz’s Late is self-fertile with a late-ish bloom timing so it should be a decent pollenizer.

As to growing peaches in pots- I grew a different peach in a 22in terra cotta pot for a few years. It produced a few fruit which were good quality, but it always seemed a bit heat stressed even with plenty of irrigation. I think the roots were getting pretty warm in the pot. But the right amount of stress can help make tasty fruit . After 2 years I planted this peach in the ground and it exploded with new growth and made way more fruit. So I think it can be done in a pot, you had just have to be prepared to get low yield. And you will probably need to re-pot every few years to prevent it from getting root bound.

Have you looked into these miniature peaches from Zaiger? I don’t have any experience with them myself but I’ve seen them and they look absolutely adorable. Dwarfing scion means they can be grafted to regular peach rootstock like Nemaugard or Lovell. Seems like a good fit for a pot maybe.

Thanks - that’s a nice reference for your pollinator. I’m hoping the white 30 gallon fabric pots will allow for a little more vigorous growth than you saw, but it’s all an experiment. Since our springs here are very unpredictable and often late frosts kill blooms, I figure I’d do one of each fruit type in a container for those late-frost years and zone stretching.

I haven’t seen those Zaiger’s… I’ll have to check them out. I planted an Eldorado peach in a container this year, and it actually has 2 small peaches on it.
