Full disclosure, I’ve not bought these Yangmei plants myself and likely won’t add the price is a bit hard for me to justify. But I’ve had mostly good experiences with Woodlanders and I think they’ve done more than any other nursery in the region for pushing cold hardiness boundaries and making those plants available. And I’ve been impressed by what I’ve seen of Plant Propagator’s posts.
Woodlanders has a good hardy citrus collection, for sure. Can’t go wrong there. Again, full disclosure, the ones I’ve gotten from them have been seed grown, so fruiting isn’t nearly as soon as with grafted plants. But that also means they can grow back from the roots after a hard freeze so you win some, you lose some.
I’ve never seen any examples of tissue cultured yangmei grown to fruiting size. How long does it take?
Perhaps I’m biased - but based on my experience with figs, tissue culture takes forever to fruit and sometimes loses the original characteristics of the parent.
I paid less for my grafted plants.
Plant Propagator used the Wuzi variety for our current stock! Planning to have a male stock as well as a crystal variety next year.
Do they make flower buds this early? Nice.
Here it seems so. My Chinese friend say here they are more advanced.
I bought a ‘Wuzi’ Yangmei from @woodlanders recently & it arrived in great shape & looks super healthy. I’ve heard lots of reports that they suffer from Root Knot Nematodes, so I plan on grafting onto the native Wax Myrtles. Hopefully that speeds up time to flowering as well. We’ll see.
If anybody has some male budwood for trade please let me know!
How did it do through winter and where 7b are you located?
Also curious. I live in 7b (though might practically be 8a since I’m in the inner city). Would love to give this a try.
My bad, I haven’t updated my profile since moving to Florida. I’m in zone 9. Someone else will have to test overwintering it further north.
