Apple curculio

What does everyone know about apple curculio? My son and neice pointed out I had a bug on my shoulder this evening and I picked it off to show them. It turned out to be some sort of weevil. Since we were under a big crabapple, I figured it was an apple curculio. It was different looking than the plum curculios I have found. It looked more like pictures of apple curc than plum curculios online.

Are they as bad as plum curculios? Do they have a similar life cycle? Clearly they are out and about my new neighborhood.

Are you assuming it is not plum curculio because it fell off an apple tree? if you discovered an apple curculio, you are certainly more observant than I am- I would have flicked it off and assumed it was PC. They seem to be mostly an issue on amelanchiers in Canada- until I read your post, I’d never heard of them. Apparently there isn’t a whole lot known.

@alan - I figured at first it was a plum curculio, but it looked funny for them. It had a longer snout than the plum curcs I have found and instead of humps on the back it had a rough/feathery area on its rear end. But this could be natual variation in PC though.

I have found some other kinds of curcs on my trees occasionally, they are more a striped body. But 95% or more are the plum curculio. I never made an ID of the other kind and since they more or less are doing the same damage and need same treatments it doesn’t matter much.

@ILParadiseFarm - Yeah, that looks like what I had on my shoulder last year. Those 90 degree antennae on its snout and the brownish fuzzy back look familiar. Granted it was a year ago and I totally forgot about this post, but that form looks very familiar.

BTW - very awesome macro shots!
