What dish do you make with apples for thanksgiving?
Cranberry chutney:
the day before (today), peel and dice four apples (about 2lb) and dice 0.5lb of dried apricots. Add one lb fresh cranberries. Put all fruits in a pot and add the juice of an orange and spices to taste (I use clover and some fresh grated ginger). Cook at low temperature until the cranberries crack and the whole mess becomes uniformly colored. Cool and place in the fridge. Serve with turkey. This thing is very tart, hugely popular and truly addictive, so you may want to double the ingredients. it is originally from a vegetarian cookbook by Nava Atlas.
Sounds really good, I really like cranberry
My grannie makes a Waldorf salad with tart apples that I always enjoy. She also makes a type of cranberry sauce.
Tart Tatin for dessert, will take a picture!
What apples? According to the French, King of Pippens (RdR), Calville Blanc, or Orleans.
Apple pie, crisp, sauce, and cider.
Sounds tasty but I think I’ll put in some sugar. I’m going to try it this year!
A great big apple pie…macintosh, golden delicious and granny smith…one day I’m hoping to be able to make it with my own apples…
couldn’t wait to have a slice so I ate some last night after it came out of the oven…the in-laws will never notice.
That does look like a big pie!
3 and a half pounds of apples…
We had apple cake and apple dumplings among other deserts.
We use to staff goose or duck with Antonovka for New Year dinner back in Russia - it is very good staffing!
Today we had apple crisp that contained Jonathan and Golden Delicious apples from our trees in the backyard. My wife made it yesterday, and then we warmed it up in the oven today before eating it with vanilla ice cream. It was a hit all around!
Of course, it tasted better since the apples were from our yard.
Chik! I know. I didn’t have any apples this year in my orchard. The go to apple in the US for tatin is Granny Smith or Gala. I used Mac’s this year and it was honestly the best I’ve made in the US ever. I was surprised. I also use more apples than the recipe calls for and double the recipe for caramelized sugar. I’ll post a picture later.
Yeah, of all the people, I should tell you about the French!!
I’ve got all three grafted and all three should have an apple or 2 this spring. But we all know how that goes, I hate to even talk about that stuff.
I’ve done TT’s a bit with chieftains, good stuff, but I’m looking forward to those pics… and your recipe?

Lots of caramel! I just drooled on my shirt. A little cream on top, yummy!
Yes, doubled the caramel! And a tablespoon of whipped cream. Ohh so good. One slice left.
