Apricot and plum protection

When should apricots and plums be physically protected? Is it only when they reach a certain size and/or color?

I have a lone apricot about 1" long and don’t want to lose this to pests! The plums are about pea-sized at most and only a handful so need to protect against pest so i can atleast taste.

I’m in PNW area.

Thanks in advance!

I try to protect the most cherished ones, when they start changing from their green color.
What kind of pests go after yours?

@Bradybb this will be the very first stonefruit ever since it’s a new graft other than cherry and pears…i think squirrels got our pears last year but i don’t want to wait for whatever pest that was to get this lone apricot.

I was thinking of enclosing it in an old Starbucks clear plastic cup that’s closed up using mcgyver style improvisation.

I recall that last year my aprium tree set one (1) fruit. The day before it was ripe to pick … they got it.

Squirrels can be difficult. The best solution is probably to keep them out of the tree.Apart from that, something like your idea may work.It could get hot inside the container,so ventilation holes will help.
