Ive been patiently waiting for years, chinese hybrids were no bueno, we were then promised GMO American chestnuts but that failed. Now i see this above, so i think they’ve finally done it. Lets help reintroduced the mighty American chestnut back into Appalachia.
I asked the chestnut restoration group for an estimated release date of the new and improved Amecian chestnut seed. Hurry up EPA!
While I’m not opposed to using GMO to produce a blight resistant American chestnut, be aware that this particular GMO tree has some problems. In particular, it grows slower. It would be better to put the oxalic oxidase gene behind a wound initiator. That is what is currently being done. It will mean more regulatory hurdles, but the benefits will be worth the wait.
And yes, I am waiting for the chance to plant some fully blight resistant American chestnut trees.
thank you for the awesome information
This thread reminded me to stop by the planting of American Chestnut trees near Florence AL. Only a few trees have nuts this year. All appear to be about 2 or 3 weeks from ripening. I’ll see if I can stop by and gather a few from a few specific trees that I know are better than average.
Im glad, and i just wanted to thank you again for sharing this information. Im sharing with as many people as i can. This app/website delivers such direct and real information and im grateful for that.
