The internet…. Can’t find receipt.
But I bought the oothecas too late and I doubt the babies had time to reach maturity and reproduce before cold weather.
Also the big ants around here were hunting as usual and probably ate the babies.
I never saw any mantis at or near where I let the babies loose their first day of life.
I won’t be buying any more.
What an incredible picture! We will have to check our… Do you do anything special after they emerge? Do you move some to another area so they all have something to feed on?
Nope they just went on about their life.
They were crawling all over the tree that evening. I see their egg sacs on just about every tree in the orchard, so I don’t worry about moving them around. They seem to do fine on their own. Some people worry about them because they aren’t native, but I figure they probably do more good than harm. All my fruit still gets pollinated. And the number of adults I see throughout the year seems pretty modest compared to the number of egg sacs and babies that emerge. I think nature is keeping them in check pretty well.
Oh are those Chinese? I thought it looked round.
Yes, I believe so. I occassionally see the Carolina egg sacs, but not very often. The shape of the Chinese can vary a bit but they are significantly larger than the others. To my knowledge the only ones we have in Iowa are the Carolina and the Chinese.
These are the adults I mostly see. Maybe someone can tell by looking at them. This picture was late September. Earlier in the season they seem to have more green coloring.
Looks chinese with the wings extending way below the abdomen.
