I have been thinking a lot about how the pear farmers grow varieties that are blight magnets because they know they can make lots of money if they grow them, which helps disease the trees of home growers.
I have been seeing different varieties of pear being compared to Bartlett that are too low production for pear farms to be interested. yet since the home grower should stay far away from the real Bartlett to protect their own trees I thought that it would be great to have a list of Bartlett like pears to help the home grower know what options they have, a list that shows the weaknesses and the strengths that each variety has. Bartlett has a fruit quality of 5 out of 9)
Here are the 3 Bartlett like pears that have gotten my attention the most:
- Harvest Queen (fruit quality 8 out of 9) Very slow to bear
- Southern Bartlett (Seemingly immune to fireblight, very productive, not productive enough for commercial use)
- Spartlet (productive; shows more tolerance to fire blight than Bartlett, slightly coarser than Bartlett)
