Bartlett like pears

I have been thinking a lot about how the pear farmers grow varieties that are blight magnets because they know they can make lots of money if they grow them, which helps disease the trees of home growers.

I have been seeing different varieties of pear being compared to Bartlett that are too low production for pear farms to be interested. yet since the home grower should stay far away from the real Bartlett to protect their own trees I thought that it would be great to have a list of Bartlett like pears to help the home grower know what options they have, a list that shows the weaknesses and the strengths that each variety has. Bartlett has a fruit quality of 5 out of 9)

Here are the 3 Bartlett like pears that have gotten my attention the most:

  1. Harvest Queen (fruit quality 8 out of 9) Very slow to bear
  2. Southern Bartlett (Seemingly immune to fireblight, very productive, not productive enough for commercial use)
  3. Spartlet (productive; shows more tolerance to fire blight than Bartlett, slightly coarser than Bartlett)

Harvest queen is one @Matt_in_Maryland and many others recommended awhile ago. Definitely like the way they grow.

I was looking through my notes and I found two more

  1. Bartlett - Improved (fruit quality 8 out of 9)
  2. Bartlett - Bagley Russet (fruit quality 7 out of 9)

Is Ubileen Gift a lot like Bartlett too? It does have Bartlett in it’s DNA.

Harvest Queen is an amazing pear.

Gorham is another good one from the Bartlett family-- supposedly less disease prone taboot.

Ubileen Gift is Clapp’s Favourite x Klementinka and is a month earlier than Bartlett.
