Don’t need a lot of money to modify an cheap old dolly, oversize no flat tires, scrap iron a little welding, a little cutting to bend the handle to your comfort, add a brace when transporting heavy containers up to 25gl. It’s all in the picture.
Total layout $50.00.tires on sail,H/F. Forgot, dolly about 30 years old, about 30+.
Well that is a thing of beauty! I don’t weld or have tools for metal-working, but I’m envious. I’ll have to stick with what I can buy, unfortunately.
I can weld, do ironworks, it was a easy job, got a lot of iron pipes, flat stock, the actual job took maybe 3 hours.
I use this thing a lot, especially for the heavy stuff, I am just 85 now.
Weather permitting I’ll be dragging all my fig trees and citrus trees out.
I kind of like the looks of this one: Cosco Handtruck, Hybrid, 3-1, Commercial, Aluminum, 800-1000 Lbs Capacity 12312ABL1E | Zoro
You need longer handle bars it makes a lot of difference to get started to lift. Once you get it up, the rest is a piece of cake.
I have a Potwheelz dolly I found on Craigslist.
Not sure I would pay retail for it, but it does work great.
Have you seen Bill’s garden cart? Looks pretty easy to DIY.
This is up on Craigslist. Ad is 17 days old so he would probably settle for less.
These caught my eye too.
I bought this at a neighborhood auction for less than $50. I have used it for extra large feed bags, oversized rocks and pieces of concrete, potted trees and the like. It spends most of its time out of doors and has never failed me. The base seems shallow but the amount of lift of large items is impressive. It is perfectly balanced so that minimal effort is required. All I can muster these days is minimal effort, so we make a good team.
I have the WORX aero cart. Moving a potted plant is probably all it’s good for. The tell you it has so many functions. but the cart itself wouldn’t hold a single bag of mulch. The wheels stick out and are always catching on things. I hate it and wished I’d never spent the exorbitant price they charge. If you do have lots of trees that you need to move…maybe, but I think any dolly would be better.
Thanks, I’d been looking for something like this!
If you have to travel on soft ground rather than a concrete floor small diameter wheels are ok. No flat 13” tires is my choice. If you’re a muscle guy you go for it. On my flat dolly,s strong winds will make them move.
Wow, for a 25 gallon pot presumably filled with a potting mix I would think that a relative cheap and light hand truck would work fine. Do you have experience using one? Only the experience itself will clearly show you what you need. Figure out how much your pots weigh and buy a hand truck appropriate for the task. You can use a compression strap to secure it and to make the hand truck easier to tilt backwards (to get the load on the truck) without losing the load. This will also make controlling the load on uneven ground easier.
compression straps
We have to move 25 gallon pots over half full of real soil all the time. Hand trucks are not great on wet uneven ground and often we tilt a heavy wheelbarrow sideways and slide the pot into it as far as we can and then use the wheelbarrow to leverage the pot up while lifting the wheelbarrow. We do this a lot because we use the wheebarrow to leverage the heavy weight into the bed of my truck by getting the lip of the wheelbarrow above the gate and lifting the handles- but this is a two man operation because someone has to grab the tree trunk to pull the tree out of the wheelbarrow while the other person is lifting the handles from below. The hand truck is also a bit of a two-man job as well in similar, difficult conditions. My fellow worker can do it solo, but I didn’t do this with heavy loads even when I was younger.
I spent about $60 for the one I use- I’m sure it’s a bit more expensive now. No-flat tires are perhaps worth the investment- tubeless tires are a pain when they go flat if you don’t have an air compressor.
Do you have this? It looks promising and my Costco one needs 2 ppl when it comes to the larger pots cause they keep falling off/short flat metal piece
I’ve never tried moving potted plants with this, but this is a wonderful cart. I have So many items and it’s so versatile highly recommend
No I don’t. It just looked good.
