Best grafting sealant

I’m trying to imagine what part of my post you thought was a joke. No. No jokes on that post.

Is this what you mean by flex seal paste? Robot or human?

I was replying to smsmith’s post a day ago that he said about using flex seal paste and then said just joking. Sorry if there was any confusion.

Yes that is the stuff I used but it was the white. It was all I had at the time and just used it for the ends of the scions. I don’t know how it would work to cover the whole scion because it sticks pretty good.

I have treekote but I realized after experimenting last year that plain white air dry clay with a little beeswax mixed in seemed to work a lot better. the clay degrades over time with exposure to the elements, and it “breathes” a little bit plus it’s white. visible among the branches and reflects heat. I mixed a little beeswax in by hand to try to make it softer to work with.

I am going to maybe try mixing a little treekote into the clay this year instead but I’m not sure how well that will work.

I used it at the graft connection and up at the tip of the graft- I wrapped the rest of the scion in buddy tape.

Thank you John S and everyone else on this thread. Toilet wax ring is easily available.

Update on the unrefined wax damaged grafts- the larger thickened up and put on good growth so it might eventually heal over some of the damage.

Unfortunately the other one was too damaged and it died so I had to cut it flush. I’ll attempt another bark or similar graft next spring to fill this part in.

First time bark grafting this year. I also used treekote grafting wax. Do you think the breathability is a real problem? My main goal is to keep moisture out of the graft. I do worry that I may have put too much wax on to close the gaps on the side of the graft. Hopefully that won’t influence the cambium union.

There’s a YouTube video where they put masking tape on the exposed parts of the graft and then on top of that they put the sealant. That seems like a good idea to prevent rot and issues with wax getting deeply into the graft.
