I’m trying to help a Maryland friend avoid Stark for her nut tree order. Is there a smaller outfit somewhere that sells nut trees with fabulous roots that you can heartily recommend? Years ago I always used Nolin River but they closed I believe after John B’s death.
Grimonut has been pretty good to me.
I only go with producers of grafted and layered nut trees for the best varietal selections. Rockbridge https://rockbridgetrees.com/ is the best for hickory and pecan. Rockbridge sells potted trees in grow bags, so they have great fine root systems and really take off fast. Grimo www.grimonut.com for heartnut, Persian walnut, and hazelnut. Grimo sells bare root, which have less luxurious root systems than Rockbridge, but they still grow ok. Znutty www.znutty.com has a good selection of hazelnut layers that are well rooted.
Some great sources in this thread, thanks for starting it.
Does anyone know if the ‘Photon’ selection at znutty is sold out for 2024 already or just for fall '23?
I can’t find a ‘email when this becomes available’ there.
I have had a devil of a time getting bareroot hazels to actually live. Is that a ‘me’ thing or are they difficult to move when barerooted?
I’ve liked Rhora’s Nut Farm selections and practices.
Another vote for Rock Bridge Trees, here.
Buzz Ferver at Perfect Circle Farm in VT also offers grafted nut tree selections.
I’ve not purchased from either place, but both owners are friends, and I’ve traded plant materials with them for years.
To add to my previous comment, I bought hazelnut and chinese chestnut seedlings from https://www.forestag.com this year. The 50 seedlings I got all had pretty bushy root systems on them, and I think the handful of deaths have had more to do with my neglect than issues with the trees.
