I have a Red Vein from TOA, and I have Niedzwetzkyana scion to graft as soon as my rootstock shows up this year. I know my Red Vein apples (and the blooms too) don’t match what I’ve heard about Niedzwetzkyana. Red Vein are moderately small, fairly red-fleshed (but not blood red), pretty sweet and not all that juicy for me. They are big enough and sweet enough to eat fresh and I think they’re pretty tasty right off the tree.
TOA is actually my local source, and they partner with the local cider house TOA isn’t exactly cheap, but every tree I’ve gotten from them has been excellent. All but one order from them over the years I picked up in person, but the shipped trees were great too. They did send me a lousy set of raspberries (40% DOA) once, but that was the only hiccup. If only they’d offer some different rootstocks, but they’re pretty exclusively MM111.
