Anyone with experience on blacknot resistant European plum varieties? I read that NY 9 Kenmore is very resistant, President is resistant, Blue Byrd and Seneca have some resistance, Mt Royal has some tolerance. Any others? I see Empress has President in its background, but I can’t find any information on if the blackknot resistance carried over. If you have blackknot on your plums I would appreciate hearing what varieties are most resistant for you. I am especially interested in cold hardy, frost resistant, or late bloomers.
In addition to President and Bluebyrd, I have 3 decent sized Jefferson plum trees that seem more resistant than my other Euros. I believe I have seen only one small knot on one of them in the last several years. Unfortunately, it also seems to bloom much earlier than other euros. My damson plum also seems resistant and tastes better than I thought it would. Now that I think of it, I don’t think I’ve seen it on my Cambridge gage yet either, but I’m not 100% sure about that.
Thanks for providing your experience. Very helpful.
Also from upstate NY here. Lake George area. I have had a lot of plum varieties. All have gotten blackknot so far except my 3 year old Superior and an Alderman. Its right next to a Stanley Prune that is by far the worst. I lost Bruce, Methley, Hanska Plumcot, Santa Rosa, and Black Ice is now infected. I also have an Alderman that is not infected and that is older, and about 15 ft tall. I have bought a President this year and put it in. I saw Empress has President in its genes and wondered the same thing. I put in a Waneta last summer and so far its not infected but its only 7 ft tall.
I wanted to add, I am putting in an Oblinaja (sp) and a Seneca in a few weeks, as they are supposed to have resistance or tolerance. I also had put in an Early Italian last year that I had read has resistance. I dont spray, so all trees have to be resistant to most problems. I had ordered 3 NY 9 (Kenmore) and they are supposed to be arriving today, but I expect them to be dead, as its taken 2 weeks for delivery since they left the nursery. They were sent USPS and they must have lost the package until yesterday when tracking picked it up again. Not holding my breath.
UPDATE:
They arrived, and outside of having sprouted in the dark, they should be ok. The nursery had placed a tight bag around the roots with no air openings, so it must have kept enough moisture inside. Excited because no one else had NY 9 in stock.
