I bought these at Wholefoods yesterday. They are as hard as rocks so I haven’t tasted them yet. This variety apparently originated in South Africa in the early 1990s. Does anyone grow them or know anything else about them?

Those scions are unlikely available for a long while. The pears were bred to be exported for substantial profits. See this article http://www.ishs.org/ishs-article/976_52

They look nice. What’s important is how do they taste?

They’re finally ripe and they’re superb - one of the best European pears I have ever tasted.

I’m pretty interested in learning more about this pear too. Taste and texture were excellent.

Old thread, I know.
We’ve been eating Flamingo pears for a few weeks now and they have been consistently very good. They do need a few days to get ripe after purchasing, but once ripe my wife and I both really enjoy them.
