Is that normal for the leaves to curl?
Yes, the leaves on this variety do that every year. I’m assuming it’s normal.
Looking very good and I am wondering fruit it is holding. I had good fruit sets on my two persimmons but one is holding two (Jt-02) and Prok three. My trees are small only three year old.
Also that Honey Jar is also looking loaded and bigger size fruit , my sugar Cane and Honey Jar sets decent but lost 99% due to critters .
Decided to make some crabapple jelly, picked a few pounds of those apples from a neighborhood tree:
If this test batch turns out ok, I may need to get a few more… I wonder what size these would be if they had been thinned:
At least one member of the family approves of them for fresh eating, too.
Is there anyway to actually reduce the tannin? I know sweetness will conceal it to a point. My brief Googling only found people talking about cashews. I’m guessing probably not.
Here’s a JT-02 that survived a squirrel attack and sustained damage for the better good. The squirrel clearly had second thoughts and gave up.
Saijos by the clusterful also make good decoys for shielding nonastringent varieties.
My nonastringent varieties have not been touched.
I don’t detect it at all in the jelly (which is more like jam because it was just run through a fine mesh sieve rather than a jelly bag). I think 1:1 juice to sugar was a little too sweet, though, I’ll cut the sugar a little in the next batch to let the tartness come through stronger.
I picked some greens today, mostly baby arugulas and some sugar snap pea shoots, it should go well braised short ribs and butternut squash purée.
This looks fantastic. Great job foraging off the land no matter how urban.
Next up I’m going to try making a crabapple/Luma apiculata jam, since that’s the only fall fruit in my own yard at the moment, and the apples seem to have plenty of pectin to spare.
I wasn’t wrong! Does anyone know if there is a toxic threshold for these things? My two year-old is hell-bent on finding it, if so:
Wild persimmons DV … here at my place. Dropping some leaves now revealing ripening fruit… it will be a few weeks yet
That smaller tree… first fruit set for it… decent crop.

Is Luma really tasty? How old is yours and are those the trunks,in the second photo?
I just got a Luma this year and love the flavor - a bit mediciny but I like it
They are absolutely beautiful in bloom and fruit multiple times in a year. @swincher , your tree is beautiful!
The seeds are somewhat large and have a strongly resinous taste, though that fades a little if you let them get super ripe. I’ve found that the little flaps on the bottom of the fruit should turn at least fully purple or even brown to get the best flavor. Even underripe taste pretty good if you just squish them with your tongue and swallow without crunching the seeds.
Try letting the fruit hang for a month beyond when they look ripe and the medicine-y taste is a lot less.
Pics of some zinnias I bought my wife a few months ago, they are putting out new buds and flowers like crazy. The colors are almost fluorescent.
Very health looking plant for this time of year.
