Bulb sources

I like High Country Gardens for their unusual stuff. Still, much of it won’t do well in wet climates with more than 30 inches of rainfall.
Nevertheless, if I can find a better price, they don’t get many orders from me.

They are definitely dry region specialists. However, a gravelly raised bed lets you get away with a lot. If you keep rain/snow off in winter, you can get away with almost anything that’s hardy.

I wish I could remember the company we got daffodil bulbs from years ago. Dutch was in the name, but I’m not sure it was Dutchgrown.

My father ordered 60 bulbs for a birthday gift for me in early October. From late September until Thanksgiving, during every phone call, he’d ask, “Did the bulbs come yet?” I had to tell him “no.” Finally, in the last days of November, we received the shipment with an apology. My father had ordered 16” daffodil bulbs, but they were still on back order, so the company decided to send us 14” daffodil bulbs instead. To make up the difference in price and to reward us for our wait, they sent us 120 bulbs instead of 60.

These days we routinely plant hundreds of garlic bulbs in December, but back then the winter planting of bulbs was not a chore we enjoyed. However, we still have dozens and dozens of daffodils – you might even say a host of golden daffodils – that come up in the spring all over our place.

I also have to say that everything I’ve gotten from then has been exceptionally high quality. I’ve also realized they also have regular sales, including pre-order sales for spring and fall shipping. These bring their prices in line with or better than a lot of the competition.
