Burying physalis peruviana/cape gooseberry deep?

Hello,
I started some physalis peruvianas about 6 weeks ago and unfortunately the timer for my grow light malfunctioned and they grew without light for I’m assuming around a week or so. They’ve become lengthened and the stems are no longer thick and sturdy. Does anyone know if they can be buried deep like tomatoes and root out from the stem? Or will this just cause rot?
