Calculating actual water flow in irrigation system

If I set up drip irrigation, my challenge is knowing how much water I am really putting down.

I’ve tried sitting a cup under an emitter but that always seems dicey. I have a gauge that you can thread into a hose end which tells you the total water flow in gallons, but that itself acts as a reducer (a bit) and seems to reduce water flow, so it’s not a real reading of what my system would normally put out.

Any ideas?

The reading thru a meter is real if the meter is permanent. I put an inline meter for my drip system in the greenhouse. Now I don’t guess about amount applied. But it still is a bit of a guess about total wetted area. And I don’t really know how much to apply. But after several years with good data on amount applied I can dial in the “best” amount.

A cup under an emitter is a decent estimate. Especially with built in emitters. I like those much better than the type that are stuck in from the outside.
