Can I cut and pot

All but one of my Celeste fig using the baggie method died after repotting. so a couple of weeks ago I tried a method posted on youtube, where the cambium is removed dusted with some rooting hormone and wrapped in foil with some dirt. This is the method that I will use from now one. I love it.

Within 2 weeks I have roots, quite a bit too! There are some small green figs on them. if I were to cut and pot now, does anyone know if the fruits would shrivel and drop off?. thx!

To propagate figs, I start with a reasonably straight piece of 10" to 14" scionwood fresh from the tree that is not present year growth. It also needs to have leaf or branch nodes near the “bottom” end. Next cut off all leaves and side growth. Afterwards, get the bottom 4" to 6" wet and dust it with Indole-3-butyric acid rooting hormone. Finally, plant it in a pot (make a hole in the soil first) up past the rooting powder. Set the pot in all-day partial shade and water normally. When roots start coming out the drainage holes of the pot it is ready to transplant elsewhere.

Richard sorry I am not very clear about my question. The video I saw the branch is still on the tree and the man does not cut it to repot until he sees root. The one I did have roots now but they also have some small green figs. If I cut and pot them now will the fruits fall off from shock?thx

I think you are saying you air layered a branch of a tree and now want to cut it off the tree. You need to wait until there are a lot of roots. Then cut it off, up pot, and keep it well watered. The figs probably won’t fall off but they probably will be subpar on eating quality.

Yes that is what I mean. There are quite a bit of roots and I love this method! I will wait then. thx

How long ago did you start this air-layer?

I did not make a note of the date but I think it was 2 to 3 wks ago. I am amazed how quick the roots developed and it will be what I will be doing from now one if I want to propagate new plants

Figs are really easy to air layer. I keep mine on the tree until there is a large mass of roots.

I just finished cutting off some air layers today. I’ve been trying some different techniques.

That’s impressive work…!! Did you have to rewet the media after setting it up?

I used a meat injector and injected water once a week.

Thank you that’s very helpful…!!
