Carrion Flower Fruit

Anyone have a opinion on it? Or know of any fruit variation between plants?

I’ve seen them before when I was young and didn’t care to try new things. I’ve only found one vine so far and it has underripe berries on it. I tried one of the ripest looking ones and it was pretty flavorless, not very juicy or dry, will wait till they ripen more and try again.

Those look out of this world! Thanks for posting about them!

Looks like a Smilax, but there are quite a few species within that genus. Do you know which one you are evaluating?

I think it is smilax herbacea or smooth carrion flower. At least it seems to match it to a T.

I never knew Smilax were edible! Maybe now I can get paid back for all the blood I have shed for them. Those are really neat looking berry clusters. Most of the ones I’ve seen have small, scattered berries and nasty thorns.

Yeah we have the nasty thorned greenbrier/wait-a-minute vine here too. The berries and shoots do actually have a flavor reminiscent of asparagus.

Would be beautiful in a flower arrangement!

Oops, sorry everyone, forgot to update the fruit after further ripening.
They got a little (little) sweetness after ripening furth and a mild almost nutty-ish flavor. Not a very juicy fruit, but still has some juice. Squishing the berries leaves a purple stain.

I wish they were more common here for me to sample and compare if there is very much variation between plants.
