Has anyone tried these? Does anyone grow them in the US?
I tried one today and it was excellent. It’s a modern type ultra crisp apple but differs from most US cultivars because the emphasis is on flavor instead of sweetness.
Apparently they are local employee-owned. Was hoping for some clues of where to find them near Portland Oregon. I’ve been buying New Zealand Envys lately, which aren’t bad. But I’m looking for other New Zealand grown apples this time of year. The USA ones are too risky after 8 months in storage. There are still some good ones, but I’m hesitant to buy several pounds on my occasional grocery outing, to find them not good when I get home.
Lately I’ve been lucky with the smaller Galas here in W. Montana lately - Stemelt brand, pretty sure they’re from Washington state. At .99/lb. too, so that’s nice; larger ones are 1.59/lb. Galas are not a terrific apple to my tastes, but these are firm, juicy, and sweet.
I’ve not yet tasted a Gala that I’d choose to have again. I can’t exactly remember the reason, probably texture and maybe bland. I live in WA state, but not sure we our best apples.
I like Cox’s Orange Pippin flavor and Golden Delicious can be really good, and is used a ton in breeding, so I usually have high expectations of Gala.
Seems like the ones here get the texture from the Cox heritage
They have those in stock at my local supermarket. Probably the only apple they are selling that was harvested within the last 9 months. They are still charging $2.50/lb for last year’s Jonagold.
