i did something stupid and put a elderberry 6ft from my romeo cherry 2 yrs ago. the elderberry is 7ft by 5ft now and the romeo is growing but not nearly as much as the other cherries put in the same time with more space. do i need to chop the elder?
Not necessarily. Some of the bush cherries can get stuck forever before finally having a grow spur. 3~4 years are not unheard of before they start doubling in size. They also put deep and thick lateral roots, if anything I’m betting on the cherries.
ive been cutting the elder back just enough to keep it from shading the cherry. the elder is to the north of the cherry so im hoping the cherry will eventually shade the elder once it catches up. been fertilizing the cherry but not the elder but the elder is crazy vigorous. wondering if the ferts are getting sucked up by the elder instead of the cherry.
