millet scatter seeded is coming up among the fartichokes and both have surrounded the burr oak baby. taking his lunch money or something?
tobacco dirt leaves and low leaves ready to color cure. mantises are 1 1/2 inch long. peaches green, fattening. mulberry, wild strawberry and black caps all coming ripe at once. millet: good growth on what came up, will sow with shallow dirt covering next year as birds took much of it
unmanaged melon patch vining out. tomato row is puny short, have to look back to see height from other years. sweet potatoes also starting to vine.
peppers are stunted but flowering. put them out later next year. saw a gorgeous blue and black-winged dragonfly in the squashes today, it kept landing on a bamboo stick to rest. didn’t get a picture. mantises are about 2 inches long, scared one up yesterday while pulling amaranth out by the grapes. native bees in plenty, not many honeybees.
corn is thigh high. saved popcorn that I direct sowed already in tassel. started sweet corn still getting height on it. sugardrop sorghum just over knee high from saved seed started early, about a foot tall from direct sown Mennonite variety.
something eating at the oyster mushrooms now when they first come up under the mulberry tree, think it’s the squirrel. one this year, he “owns” the yard and garden and I haven’t tried to trap him, he’s been fairly unobtrusive so far.
pad that fell off the cactus in the wind is rooting itself.
cured, aged, dried and now cut across the grain in thin strips. tastes a bit like pipe tobacco, probably the rustica I have in the mix is doing that. rolling was a bit of a pain, I cased it to cut and it was not quite all the way dry again. waiting a few days for the next smoke.
all in all it’s pleasant and pretty mild in flavor, fragrant. worth doing
planted more KY and PA this year and simox, so should be less “juicy” next year. also in the patch is wrapper tobacco, seed from last year’s plants that got biggest, and golden wilt. (landrace maybe? that extra one is already getting big leaves. will have to see how fast it grows to decide if it’s a keeper)
these cape gooseberries have been growing since November. they were the ones in the top shelf in the greenhouse that I planted just to have something green to look at; they made a few berries and now are just hanging out
I saved some weather charts again, they’ll only be of interest to me I think.

the orach is again seeding itself and is again taller than me. the grapes are still holding! lots of them, himrod. the braeburn has 3 apples on it.
tomato row has a troubled spot where all are stunted. I put tomatoes out too early this year as usual and it finally got me, they are not getting any height. most have flowers and fruit but this one area they are all so puny. most are shorter than usual too. I need to check my impatience next spring.
letting garlic go to seed so I can replant those
leaf cutter bees in the lilac. peppers going. okra starting, it’s always so sad here. I keep trying though
grasshoppers attacked my sumac and ate every bit of the berry part down to the stem. I’m furious I was watching these daily to pick and grind them.
Awesome you are getting olives!! Arbequina? In a container? I had to really restrain myself not to buy one. I don’t know how you process them, but Arbequina olive oil is so spicy delicious.
all my olives are in pots right now, this one is a koroneiki! my arbequina and this one flowered this year both of them, and this one actually has the goods. I’m pretty excited. even if it drops them all this year, it means eventually I’ll get some
you need a press to make the oil but I’ll be pickling mine.
Very cool. It’s been a long time since I had koroneiki, trying to remember, it’s greener and more typical Greek? I loooove the Spanish…h the buttery smoothness of hojiblanca being my favorite. Where did you get yours and how old are they flowering and fruiting this year?
yes small oily green olives from this one. I got my arbequina years and years ago from a box store. this one I bought two or 3 years ago, it’s been in a small pot, 5 gallon I think, ever since. then the other I have is a chemlali, that one has put on a lot more growth and thickness than the others but has not flowered yet, it’s 2 years old (in the current pot).
this one that has fruit was from fastgrowingtrees, the others were from etsy sellers.
