Chronicles of a city plot, Spokane

I’m spending today curating my view from the rocking chair, and testing leaving some starts overnight. weather says 43 but it’s been lower than reality constantly for months so I’m taking a risk on it.

Friday night it’ll be 47ish and I’m pulling all the free giving away stuff out and it’s staying out until Sunday. my own stuff I’ll start leaving out on Monday i think

You did so muc working revamping all your beds- bravo. Do you fine you have enough space to plant though? I imagine you lost planting space?

i think i only lost a little. things that were coming up in the paths mostly. i was planting in mound rows last year and one of them was overtaken by volunteers. i still have two large mound areas and one long row for just tomatoes, which i didn’t bed up.

the big mound in front of the greenhouse was half lost but i built a raised cold frame bed by the shed where i had nothing much last year, and I’m planting in a corner that was just weeds and grass too. so i lost a little and gained a little?

down the center here is the tomato strip mound and on the right is two in ground mounds. i raised only the one area here

where the big mound used to be. but back behind the greenhouse i can plant now and there’s that raised bed by the shed top left in this photo. not much would grow there, i usually hucked my fig pots there each year. this year they’ll go between the raised bed and greenhouse instead.

Looks great.

What’s the big space by the greenhouse becoming?

fire pit/cooking zone. i just finished putting stuff there today, tomorrow I’ll pull the old grill over nearby and our little camping folding table will go by one of the benches.

the little free boxes need to get put up, I’m waiting for a helper on those. i don’t think i can manage that one by myself.

free garden stuff/plant day

about ten people brought even more things, and about 50 people have come by to get a few things.

really busy, everyone is cool, super super fun time so far. i 7usually stay until dark but it was a feeding frenzy! most things are gone, squash and pumpkins went first.

it’s 80F in the sun

I’m probably going to end early, almost nothing is left!

a friend stopped by and brought me a massive grape she is tearing out. I’ve got a few varieties from her today. another woman brought 3 flats of strawberries!

i took one coleus, two peppers, and a Thai basil to go with my grapes. someone even brought free dozens of duck eggs.

a great day

today I’ve got to put my own stuff further into the sun and even plant some things out. the dog is waiting for me to get to work

the raised beds are making me have to think about where to put what this year. I’ve got the long mound for tomatoes and squash and a pair of mounds for tobacco, a little sweet corn, and sorghum.

going to put the last raised bed under the apple trees just at the drip line, maybe fill it with strawberries. or??? anyway, something not tall.

i got a in state plant sales license for live plants also, as a tip from a tattoo client who works at licensing and helped me add it to my business license (paintings) and tattoo license. it runs until June 1 next year. so now I’m thinking about propagating my stuff. the landrace squash and tobacco next year. gooseberries. etc

didn’t cost me anything to add it, which was nice.

i put some okra that’s germinated out as a test too. the tall bed soil has been over 55f early mornings for days. I’m hand watering a bit as i put stuff in but need to get the water turned on and set up for the year. an unpleasant and procrastinated task

looking over the back west half for a spot to put this quince that’s been in the pot since last year. it’ll go in this fall. i have a medlar that’s going by the driveway then as well

this photo has 9 dwarf fruit trees in it, and the potted quince.

the green are established trees. the pink is the one I’m thinking on over my coffee today.

they live along the fence line and in between the beds. my mound beds used to run between them.

also I’ve got a lot to plant out into the beds today and some into the remaining mounds at that back corner and along the panel.

I picked up a medlar on a whim and have not decided where to put it… maybe my mom would like one? Hehe…

planted out about a third of the things today then started in earnest to put together some kind of drip irrigation to these raised beds. oh no.

the horror. the horror

i am lost. I am waiting for a friend who might be able to help to have a free day to come by. I’ll take another run at it tomorrow after planting.

water pressure and figuring out zones and hiding the ugly spaghetti of tubes and figuring out how to connect half inch tubes to a three quarter inch hose…plus hoses between things. a nightmare day

hostas finally appear.

plants needed encouragement

another third of things in the ground, seed for corn, sorghum, beans, another round of okra, lettuce in the shade. put in one of the winecap beds with some salvaged mycelium.

gave up on the tubes until my hydraulics educated friend can come by to help. i can’t water by hand much longer though.

updated overall photos; there’s one pile of junk by the wheelbarrow and another pile by the storage shed/gate area, all other cleanup is finished.

still have to set up: irrigation, compost area, propagation tank, free library.

then I’ve got to rake out and reset the greenhouse, cut in the fans and store rolled all the reflectix. all my domes and trays are in the potting bench outside in the shade by the house which is good. nothing else in there but shelves and such.

out front I’ll weed whack next week maybe. the grass is coming through all my chip since i haven’t been able to get more.
