Columbine from seed

OK, have any of you grown columbine from seed? The literature I am reading says they “grow better” with a short period of stratification, but it says anywhere from a few days to a month.

Should I be starting them by now? How long do I really need to stratify them? Can I do it in a bag of peat and vermiculite in the fridge like I do with tree seeds?

Any tips?

They’re a common wildflower in the right areas, and self-seed readily here. I’d just stick them in the fridge as you described for a while. It might help to rub them between a couple of pieces of sandpaper to scarify them, but that’s just speculation on my part.

I did not stratify and mine came up…my seed packet didnt say to stratify either though. Does yours?

It is pretty easy to grow from seeds. The key is start in fall, or even in winter, right outside or use fridge.Mine grow babies every year on it’s own…

I trired Columbine from seed. Not one seed took. I found them difficult, impossible really; mine were hybrids from England.
