Confess: what have you ordered for spring 26?

Prok is relatively easy to find, but Madison citrus surprisingly has a huge selection of persimmon including geneva long/gordon. A bit pricy though. Consider getting seedlings and see who survives a winter and graft on that

On the topic of raspberries I wasn’t able to find a Canadian source for Amethyst purple Raspberry, or a place to order a small number of Cascade delight raspberries this year. If anyone has some or knows of a place, let me know. Maybe this is better for the trading post section.

Pretty excited about trying to push the zone a bit and just see what succeeds and fails. I’m in a protected area in a city on a north facing slope so I’m somewhat hopeful.

Getting better at grafting is also something I’m glad to be doing. From the library I took out the grafting handbook as well as the bench grafter’s handbook which have thrown fuel on the fire of wanting to get better at grafting. I’m also going to try and graft (hopefully successfully) cucurbits, tomatoes, and if I’ve got good enough material raspberries (which is a digression).

You may have seen them already, but Skillcult’s grafting videos are pretty thorough and easy to follow. My success went way up from year 1 to year 2 Good luck!

I just wanted to say to not be worried about the elderberry being unprotected. Once you’re a year in the ground it will become a weed that enjoys being chopped.

Thanks, I’ve heard the name, but haven’t searched out the content as of yet.

You might want to protect it the first year though. I planted 6 at a family house with heavy deer pressure and 4 were eaten to oblivion and actually killed. The other two managed to regrow hiding in the weeds. I have low deer pressure and mine have never been touched.

A few more orders left has ballooned into many more as I become obsessed with alpine strawberries. :woman_facepalming:t4:Ordering a variety of seeds, begging for plants, and brainstorming cheap, small space, DIY vertical planting. It will be a relief to slow the “discovery phase” of edible gardening in a year

Although, the manager at Hirts just outright cancelled my order in response to asking if they could add something, so that’s one less order for now! She was clearly having a bad day…

It’s gotten out of hand in a good way - just too many trees to try my hand at. At least I’ve learned that I don’t want any more stone fruit (too needy), pome fruit (have enough), figs (20 varieties is enough, right?), and citrus (love them but too pot-bound).

Had to get a few more though:

  • Giboshi/Smith’s Best Asian persimmon - wanted to try a pollination variant
  • Hunt fig - even though I have so damn many this one sounds perfect for the South
  • Ascolano olive - second try on this supposed-cold hardy variety; like growing olives in pots and going to try to turn a few into bonsais with occasional in-ground growth

I started out with a list that was several thousand long, so . . . I’m doing well to have pared it down to only a few hundred!

In all seriousness, this is the year I have finally cleared out a bunch of area I want to use as an orchard, so I’m trying to fill it up with lots of cool trees I really want to eat the fruit from.

Only after you’ve trialed 100 and cut it down to your 20 favorite

Trust me, I’d have 100 if I thought I could handle that many pots/bushes, but I’ve tried to appreciate the ones that are excellent regardless of my challenging humid southeastern climate. So far my Rockaway Green and Green Michurinska have been stellar plus my friend’s Smith and Bourjasotte Grise have given great results. Now I’m just trying to fill the gaps with non-berry figs since I have so many of those. Love my Celeste sugar fig - truly amazing quality even though it’s as common as can be - but I need a honey. Thinking LSU Champagne with its shape and short hang time.

The figaholics sale starts tomorrow. It’s the perfect time to pickup those five or so honey fig varieties to trial.

You almost pushed me down the strawberry rabbit hole, but I resisted. I have White Soul Alpine and Tresca from Baker’s Creek already, I don’t need Pineapple Crush and Golden Dessert and Musks. I swear I don’t…

Stay strong!! I surely didn’t. We can always trade seeds later this year.

What varieties are you still thinking over?

Currently: Calderona, Figoín, Gozo Girl, Mavra Sika or Marva Vasilika Sika, Moscatel Preto, Patlıcan, Rogil, São Miguel Roxo

What are you thinkin of

So many things that I want. There is like 3 or 4 sugar cane varieties, 2-3 gingers and tumerics, guavas, persimmons, plums and now strawberries. Just gotta keep telling myself there is already too much to do.
