Container tree companion plants

Apologies for starting another container tree thread when there are so many. But, it doesn’t seem any are right for asking this question: what (if anything) do you plant in with your container trees? I’ve seen some pictures with maybe strawberries, but will their roots not interfere with the fruit tree? Is it too risky to the health of the fruit tree to share a container? Or, do you plants herbs and such and fertilize more?

This isn’t a tree but a bush, but I have a goumi in a big planter and I plan on putting radishes in the pot with it this spring.

Strawberries are probably a little too heavy feeding, but most herbs should do fine. It would depend on the tree as well, how much food it needs, water needs etc. But if the needs match (ie an herb that uses less with a tree that uses more) than it should be good. I have a volunteer pepper growing with my potted dwarf papaya, and the two of them are doing fine (other than the pot being too small for the papaya).

Strawberry roots don’t seem to spread enough to hurt the tree unless you have a very small pot. Plus their roots are not very thick or strong.

I’ve planted radish in mine too but you have add more potting mix every time harvest comes around from my experience

Certain lettuce also have friendly root systems too.

Yeah i figured the radish will help me get new soil down deeper into the pot lol. Goumi in my pot should help give them nitrogen too

I sometimes seed White or Crimson clover in trees. Pretty bee attracting flowers. Crowds out weeds. Traps moisture from escaping. But it does itself take nutrients. Next time I hope to try newer dwarf clovers.
