I stuck some seed in the ground just for the heck of it this year as well.. Noticed some of it was tasseling the other day so took a closer look. Green aphids all over the stalks, leaves, and tassels. Sprayed them and they’re looking much better now. First ear forming looks like:
I grew out some white seed collected from growing Buhl corn in 2023. This produced white seed with the exception of 2 ears which have a few very pale yellow seed. What is interesting about them is that it is the palest yellow corn I’ve seen. When the seed is in the milk stage, I can clearly see the yellow kernels mixed among the white. But when it is fully dry, it is almost impossible to discern yellow from white. I’m not sure if this will ever go anywhere, but I am going to save these very pale yellow seed. Maybe someday I will breed some interesting new variety of corn from them.
I feel your pain. The deer came in and ate alot of the silk on the outside rows. I wondered if it would have an effect. I have a lot of barren spots on the ears. Sometimes the entire side isn’t pollenated.
