My first year Hudson Golden Gem Apple tree suffered some damage and was split in half so I topped it off below the damage, although there were no branches below the injured site. There are buds visible on the trunk. Can this tree come back in the spring? It’s on MM111 and was going into its second year. Thanks
I think it could survive. I think I would try to seal the top so that it doesn’t loose moisture.
If the roots are good and healthy, there will be a big push of energy come spring. I wouldn’t worry
It will survive. Most trees, especially young trees, have dormant buds that we dont see. When damage occurs, they are triggered to grow. Watch for growth off the root stock and pinch it off, and only allow growth from above the graft. Pick a vigorous shoot to become your new leader and away you go. You will be a year or two behind, but it should still do fine.
Thanks for the replies. I’ll post back in the spring for results.
I have a GoldRush that looks identical to that now. The deer rubbed all the bark off so I headed it. The main risk is it could come back from below the graft, be sure that doesn’t happen. My GR has a couple low sprouts so I can get the real deal, but I may graft it over to something else since I am starting over on it anyway.
