Damaged Pear Tree?

Someone driving a pickup truck turned around in the yard and has damage an Asian Pear tree that I had planted last year, snapping it off the trunk (which was about 1 inch in diameter) about 15 inches above the ground. What should I do?

I would cut the top off even and let it grow back out. It should be ok. They are grafted lower than that so it will grow back true to type.

That stinks. I’m sorry about your tree.

The tree will probably put out new growth above the graft. Train and keep one shoot, and remove everything else below that shoot. That new shoot will make a fine central leader. But, 15" is not a bad height to start a vase shape if that’s what you want, in which case you’d handle things a little differently. Clark knows pears - I’m happy to second his thoughts.

P.S. Merry Christmas anyway!!

I have a halls hardy almond that was crushed by another tree falling on it. I cut it off about two feet high and it grew completely back, it did sprout one branch out below the graft

Thanks, I will keep an eye on it and see what sort of growth may start on it in the spring. I may post back for more advice then.
