Dogwood planting advice

I purchased 10 small dogwood trees, about 18-30" tall and was thinking about putting them in the garden for the summer and planting them in their permanent positions in the fall. My thinking was I can keep a better eye on them and have them well watered via soaker hose, and give them a good start before planting them out. (they will be getting full sun in the garden, but no so in their final positions)

Any thoughts on this? Will it be doing more harm than good to plant and replant the trees? Or should I just leave them in the garden until late winter and move them then?

Thanks!
Bart

Are these bare root or are they in pots? If pots, what size?

Sorry, I should have mentioned that they are bare root plants

If re-planting, I would wait until next winter. Too much new root growth disturbance otherwise.
