Drip irrigation 101

Gee, all the battery-operated valves available nowadays seem to have timers. I used to have one that measured volume, which made better sense, but I let it freeze, I think.

I had two of the three-output Orbit timers and both failed. One just wouldn’t turn on at all after a while, the other one worked for four months, then one day it came on correctly, but didn’t shut off, it just kept running (this failure kept repeating when I’d try it again under observation). These things were like $60!

I have had problems with Orbit hose timers failing as well. Specially not turning off. Rainbird has worked better for me.

How do the rain delay timers and sensors work? We have a lot of “false alarm” storms that end up only producing 0.04" of rain. Do they allow for a minimum amount of rain before cancelling a watering?

Also, some delay when rain is “in the forecast.”. I cant tell you how many times we have a “chance” of rain five days in a row, and we don’t get a drop.
