30 acres per hr from that tiny thing? Ha, I don’t think so. Looks wasteful of spray and a spray drift nightmare to me. But then my experience with fixed wing aircraft spraying large acreages of field crops was generally poor. They were fast but results were poor compared to a ground sprayer. Poor being poor coverage, poor pest control, and lots of off target drift.
I’m waiting for the robot sprayers/harvesters.
I’d agree with Fruitnut. Unless you have many pre-charged battery changes for it, no way you can keep that flying and spraying for an hour. Let’s see, typical spray rates are something like 50-100g per acre, that would be 10-20 refills per acre. I don’t think so…
Tech is always improving. If it’s eventually cheaper and faster – that’s the way things will go. I’m still waiting for my drone delivered pizza though.
My son bought a racing drone. It’s a sight to behold! It goes 60mph, and it is a cheap one. Virtual reality vision optional. 1080p video. He has a normal drone. It has a huge range, amazing things.
1300 feet height is possible. Almost impossible to crash. The drone lands in spot it took off if communications breakdown. It hovers a few minutes to see if communication can be re-established. before it auto-lands. The video from it is fascinating.
I agree. That thing is so small, I doubt it could hold 10 gallons. Most labels prohibit sprays more concentrated than 10 gal./acre. That means, at best, the drone would have to be refilled 30 times per hour to spray 30 acres.
There was a workable spray drone being used in Japan a few years back, but it was more the size of a small helicopter (really an unmanned helicopter). I believe it was used in fruit where the spacing was so tight, there wasn’t enough room to drive a sprayer down the rows (land prices are very high in Japan, so they probably space stuff as if they were planting it in Fruitnut’s greenhouse ).
The Japanese spray drone cost about a million dollars, if I remember right.
Ten gallons of water weigh 83+ lbs.
Looking at that bird… I don’t think so.
Predator drone has been used as a disinfectant… may be a little too drastic for this.
