Early pear crop not looking great

My early pear crop is not looking great presumably due to all the rain we got at the time of bloom. Not many pears setting most are just falling off. Fortunately some later blooming trees such as my small yellow pear look better than the others so far. Plenty of apples and other fruits but I’m not real excited about them. I suspected the strange weather might claim a lot of my crop and it appears I was right again it just happened differently than I thought it would. It’s a mixed blessing all this new growth will help my pear crop in 2 years. All this new growth means I’ve hot to watch out for disease more so than normal. Once in awhile trees need a break.

Sorry to hear this, I have become interested in pears by following your threads. I was strictly an apple person until a plum thread on Garden web got me hooked and your pears did the same to me here. My four Russian pear grafts and my Beedle scion all have taken, I have a few more years till my first pear.

There will still be plenty for us we just won’t have a glut of pears this year. I should be able to post pictures of a couple not commonly seen such as Douglas and will evaluate how those a did here.

It could also be the cold before bloom affected things. I had some plums which bloomed but didn’t set much at all, I think there was some internal damage from the 19F before it bloomed. I only lost a few early pears in that cold blast.

I had more of my early blooming pears (Orient and Kieffer) drop than I expected but there’s enough for home eating. This is the first year my Moonglow appears to be setting a good crop. My apples trees are slowly producing more each year and they look good right now.

Yea that stinks. I am not feeling so good about my crop set this year now either. Currently poor pollination weather. Also my apple blossoms look “dry” and the pollen looks dark brown as opposed to that bright yellow. Thought I had dodged the cold weather issues but maybe not as well as I thought.

Sorry to hear it. I’m actually fairly excited about mine. I have 8 or 10 European pears and one Asian pear and they’re all loaded with blossoms. Most have been in the ground for 5 years or so and many have fruited before, but it looks like all of them will fruit this year, including Honey Sweet and Harrow Sweet, which I haven’t had before.

Sounds like great pears! Harrow sweet has a small crop on for me and they look great. Harrow sweet and my small yellow pear bloomed later so they will likely carry their fruit. That many pear trees yields a lot of pears so I’m excited for you to post some pictures later. I’ve really added a lot of new ones but I always find more id like to try.

@clarkinks, I agree with this, especially since my son is a pear lover. I found an Asian market that has a number of pear varieties that are absolutely delicious, but I would like to taste some fresh from the tree. My plan is to beg for some scion wood next spring and try to graft and grow a couple trees for him.
